Theme and Summary

Overview

Today students will read a short literary passage, determine a theme, and summarize the text. Then they will plan a short informational paragraph that clearly introduces the topic and groups related ideas, using a format that helps readers understand.

Learning intentions

Students will be able to:

• Determine a theme by using details from a text (including character responses to challenges).
• Summarize the text using the most important events and ideas.
• Introduce a topic clearly and state a focus for writing.
• Organize related information logically and use headings (or clear sections) to help readers.

I can:

• Identify a theme and explain how I know using at least two details.
• Write a summary that includes key events and does not include unnecessary minor details.
• Draft a paragraph plan with a clear introduction and logically grouped points.
• Use a simple formatting structure (heading or sections) to make my writing easy to follow.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Focus routine. Teacher writes the day’s goal on the board: “Find the theme, then summarize.” Students turn and talk: What is the difference between a theme and a main idea?

2. 5–12 min · Mini-lesson: Theme + evidence. Teacher displays an example sentence stem: “The theme is ___ because ___.” Teacher reminds students that themes are usually lessons or big ideas, and evidence can show how characters respond to challenges. Students underline one place in the passage where a character faces a challenge.

3. 12–25 min · Read and annotate (guided). Teacher gives students a printed short passage (2–3 pages) and reads the first paragraph aloud, then students continue silently with annotation prompts: underline character actions, circle challenge words, and box evidence lines. Students record two pieces of evidence that show responses to challenges.

4. 25–33 min · Theme determination. Teacher models thinking briefly with one student-friendly option: “Possible theme: Perseverance matters because…” Students choose one theme statement, then complete: “The theme is ____. This is shown when ____ and ____.”

5. 33–42 min · Summarize with a simple structure. Teacher shares a 3-part summary frame: “First…, Next…, Finally…” Students write a 4–6 sentence summary that includes the key events and mentions the overall idea of what the characters learn.

6. 42–50 min · Plan a clear writing format. Teacher introduces a one-paragraph planning template titled “Theme and Summary.” Emphasize CCSS formatting: heading/sections and grouped ideas. Students complete the plan:

• Heading: Theme and Summary
• Intro (1–2 sentences): topic + focus (their chosen theme)
• Evidence group (2–3 sentences): two evidence details
• Summary group (1–2 sentences): their 3-part summary in compact form

7. 50–58 min · Quick draft (short paragraph). Teacher instructs: Write one paragraph based on the plan. Remind students to use correct grammar and complete sentences. Students draft and reread for clarity.

8. 58–60 min · Exit ticket. Teacher collects:

• One theme statement + one evidence detail
• One-sentence summary (student’s best one)

• Printed short literary passage appropriate for Grade 5 (story or drama excerpt)
• Teacher copy of passage with optional model annotations
• Theme and Summary planning sheet (heading + sections)
• Student annotation highlighters/pencils
• Timer/projector (optional)
• Sentence stems displayed on board (theme evidence; summary frame)
• Exit ticket slips or a half-sheet per student

Assessment

• During annotation (25 minutes): teacher checks for evidence tied to character responses.
• During theme step (25–33 minutes): quick teacher scan of theme statements using the stem.
• Exit ticket (last 2 minutes): collects theme + evidence + one-sentence summary for accuracy and focus.

Differentiation

• Support: Provide sentence starters for theme and evidence (“The character struggles with…,” “This shows the theme because…”). Offer a partially filled planning template for students needing structure.
• Support: Provide an annotated sample of what “key evidence” looks like (one sentence highlighted and labeled “evidence”).
• Challenge/extension in-class: Ask advanced students to include a “counter-detail” (a detail that seems less relevant) and explain why it is not part of the theme or why it still connects.
• EAL/SEN: Allow oral rehearsal of theme and summary before writing; permit use of a graphic organizer with three summary prompts (First/Next/Finally). Encourage reading aloud of one paragraph to strengthen comprehension.
