Understanding RACE

Overview

In Lesson 3 of the four-lesson unit “Venn Diagrams and RACE Strategy,” students learn a four-step process for responding to questions about a text: Restate, Answer, Cite evidence, and Explain. Building on earlier work identifying similarities and differences with Venn diagrams, students practice turning text evidence into a clear written response.

Lesson structure (30 minutes)

1. 0–4 min · Hook and connection. Teacher displays a question such as “Why are bees important to plants?” and asks students to compare a one-word answer with a complete, evidence-based response using the opening question and response comparison. Students turn and talk about which response is stronger and explain why.

2. 4–10 min · Teach RACE. Teacher introduces the four steps on the RACE strategy teaching slides: Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite evidence from the text, and Explain how the evidence supports the answer. Model a short response aloud, using the class prompt: “Why do bees help flowering plants?” Students repeat the steps, record the four words, and identify each part of the model response.

3. 10–15 min · Read and annotate. Teacher reads a short grade-appropriate informational paragraph about bees and flowering plants, included on the RACE response worksheet, then models underlining a fact that answers the question. Students read the paragraph independently or with a partner, circle a key idea, and underline one piece of evidence. Briefly check that students can point to the evidence in the text before writing.

4. 15–23 min · Guided RACE response. Teacher works through the worksheet response frame one step at a time, pausing to ask, “Did we restate the question?” and “How does this evidence support our answer?” Students complete their own response on the RACE response worksheet. Prompt students to use a complete sentence for each part and remind them that evidence must come from the paragraph, not from guessing or personal experience.

5. 23–27 min · Partner review. Teacher displays the RACE checklist on the partner-review checklist and assigns students to pairs. Partners read their responses aloud, identify the four RACE parts, and offer one specific suggestion, such as adding evidence or explaining the connection. Students revise one sentence based on the feedback.

6. 27–30 min · Share and exit check. Teacher invites two or three students to read revised responses and revisits the purpose of using evidence with the closing reflection prompt. Students complete the final prompt on the RACE response worksheet: “Which RACE step is easiest for you, and which step needs more practice?”

Assessment

• During instruction, ask students to identify each RACE part in the modeled response and explain why the evidence is relevant.
• Check students’ annotations and written responses for a restated question, accurate answer, text evidence, and explanation.
• Use the final reflection to identify students who need additional support with citing evidence or explaining their thinking before Lesson 4.

Differentiation

• Support developing writers with a color-coded RACE frame, sentence starters such as “The text asks…” and “This shows…,” and a word bank from the paragraph.
• Allow students who need reading support to hear the paragraph read aloud, reread it with a partner, or use teacher-highlighted evidence choices.
• For multilingual learners, preview key words such as “evidence,” “support,” and “important,” and rehearse responses orally before writing.
• Extend ready writers by asking them to include two pieces of evidence or explain why one detail is stronger than another.
