Lesson Timeline

1. Introduction & Hook (5 minutes)

Activity: Begin with a brief engaging question displayed on the board:
"What stories or lessons have you heard from the Old Testament, and why might they still matter today?"

• Students discuss with a partner for 1-2 minutes.
• Selected pairs share out to the class to spark interest.

2. Guided Reading & Text Analysis (15 minutes)

Activity:

• Divide the class into 4 groups of 32 students by section or physical space to facilitate management.
• Each group receives different Old Testament excerpts (e.g., Creation story, Ten Commandments, David and Goliath, Psalms of lament).
• Groups read excerpts silently, then collaboratively identify:
  • Central themes
  • Character motivations and developments
  • Moral or ethical questions raised
• Use guided questions aligned with CCSS RL.9-10.3 and RI.9-10.1 on their handouts to support analysis.

3. Collaborative Discussion & Synthesis (10 minutes)

Activity:

• Within groups, students engage in a structured discussion guided by SL.9-10.1 asking:

  • What lessons or values do these stories communicate?
  • How do the characters’ decisions shape outcomes?
  • Can these lessons be applied today? How?

• Groups create a visual mind map on chart paper summarizing their insights.

4. Group Presentations (10 minutes)

Activity:

• Each group selects 2-3 speakers to present their mind map and key findings to the class.
• Presentations should highlight textual evidence (addressing CCSS RI.9-10.1) and thematic understanding.

5. Independent Writing & Reflection (5 minutes)

Activity:

• Students write a brief 3-4 sentence response answering:
  • Which Old Testament story or theme resonated most with you, and why? How can you relate this lesson to your own life or today’s world?
• Collect responses for formative assessment aligned with CCSS W.9-10.2.
