Unusual Spelling Patterns

Day One: Say, Spell, Say

Objective

Students will be able to correctly pronounce and spell words with unusual spelling patterns that represent short e, short i, short u, long e, and g sounds. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.3.A: Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology to read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words.

Essential Question

How can knowing unusual spelling patterns help us read and spell difficult words correctly?

Lesson Plan Format

I Do (5 minutes)

• Introduce the lesson by explaining unusual spelling patterns that produce sounds students may not expect (short e in health, against, says; short i in women; short u in blood, month; long e in receive, magazine; g sound in guess).
• Pronounce each word clearly and show the spelling while pointing out which letters create unusual sounds.
• Model saying the word aloud, spelling it slowly, and then saying it aloud again.

We Do (5 minutes)

• As a class, pronounce and spell together selected words: health, women, receive, guess.
• Use a whiteboard or projector to write the words, emphasizing each unusual pattern.
• Practice choral spelling and saying words aloud.

Two Do (5 minutes)

• Students pair up. Each pair selects 3 unusual spelling words from the list and takes turns saying, spelling, and saying the word aloud to each other.
• Circulate to provide support and correct pronunciation or spelling as needed.

You Do (3 minutes)

• Individually, students say aloud and write the word against three times, then say it aloud again.

Exit Ticket (2 minutes)

• On a small card, write one word with an unusual spelling from today’s list, spell it aloud silently in their head, then write it down.
• Collect cards as quick informal assessment.

Day Two: Hidden Words

Objective

Students will identify and write words containing unusual spelling patterns within rows of mixed letters. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.3.B: Decode multisyllable words in context and isolate unusual spellings.

Lesson Plan Format

I Do (4 minutes)

• Display a row of jumbled letters containing hidden words: e.g. "guhslehetalthmomnt" (hidden guess, health, month).
• Model how to look for visible sequences that match known words with unusual spellings.

We Do (5 minutes)

• Together, find one word in a new jumble of letters, highlighting the unusual spelling part, and write it on the board.

Two Do (6 minutes)

• Students work in pairs with printed letter rows: e.g., "rguaidenmagazie", "wlthguiltystle".
• Each pair writes down all hidden correct words containing unusual spellings they find.

You Do (3 minutes)

• Individually, students circle or underline one word with unusual spelling from a short list of mixed letters, then write the word neatly.

Exit Ticket (2 minutes)

• Reveal a short string of letters; students write the first unusual spelling word they spot.

Day Three: Writing Sentences with Unusual Spellings

Objective

We Do (5 minutes)

• Prompt students to suggest sentence ideas and write one together.

Two Do (6 minutes)

• In pairs, students choose three words from the unusual words list and write three sentences aloud together, then one volunteer shares.

You Do (3 minutes)

• Individually write five complete sentences or a short story using 5 different unusual spelling words from the list.

• Share one sentence with a partner, underlining the unusual spelling word used.

Day Four: Word Analysis and Vocabulary

Objective

• Choose receive, define it, identify the unusual ‘cei’ spelling that sounds like /see/.
• Find a rhyming word for receive (e.g., believe).

We Do (5 minutes)

• Explore word guilt: break it into parts, define, and find rhyme (built).
• Correct a mis-spelled version of guilt on the board.

Two Do (6 minutes)

• In pairs, students select three words and:

1. Define or explain the word
2. Find a rhyme
3. Proofread three simple sentences for misspelled unusual words.

You Do (3 minutes)

• Individually, students proofread a sentence with one misspelled unusual spelling word and write the correct spelling.

Day Five: Assessment

Objective

• Individual assessment: Students write a short paragraph using at least 5 words from the list, demonstrating correct spelling.

• Students write one unusual spelling word that they found challenging during the assessment and one strategy they used to spell it correctly.
