Lesson Plan

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Greeting and Overview:

   • Welcome the students and briefly discuss the importance of verbs in sentences (2 minutes).

2. Verbs in Motion:

   • Ask students to stand up and act out the verb you call out (e.g., jump, run, dance) to warm up and emphasize verbs as action words (3 minutes).

3. Class Discussion:

   • Write a simple sentence on the board (e.g., The dog runs). Ask students to identify the verb and discuss what action it describes (5 minutes).

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

1. Explanation:

   • Briefly define verbs as words that describe an action or state of being. Explain that by using more interesting, vivid verbs, writing becomes more engaging (3 minutes).

2. Examples:

   • Provide a list of dull verbs (e.g., goes, says, gets) and vivid verbs (e.g., sprints, exclaims, acquires) on the board. Discuss how the vivid verbs give more information and excitement (5 minutes).

3. Demonstration:

   • Transform a dull sentence by substituting vivid verbs and discuss as a class how it changes the imagery and emotion. Example: "The cat goes to the tree" becomes "The cat prowls to the tree" (2 minutes).

Guided Practice (15 minutes)

1. Verb Transform Activity:

   • Hand out sentence worksheets. In pairs, have students identify verbs in simple sentences and replace them with vivid verbs from the list (8 minutes).

2. Sharing and Feedback:

   • Ask several pairs to share their transformed sentences with the class. Encourage other students to provide positive feedback about the word choices (7 minutes).

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

1. Creative Writing:

   • Ask students to write a short paragraph (3-4 sentences) about a fun day using as many vivid verbs as they can. Encourage creativity and imaginative scenarios (8 minutes).

2. Peer Review:

   • Have students exchange their paragraphs with a partner for a quick peer review. They should underline the vivid verbs in their partner’s writing (2 minutes).

Conclusion and Review (5 minutes)

1. Class Recap:

   • Review the importance of vivid verbs by asking students to provide examples of how vivid verbs enhanced their sentences (2 minutes).

2. Exit Ticket (Verb Charades):

   • Hand out index cards with vivid verbs written on them. Each student acts out their verb for the class to guess as they exit (3 minutes).
