Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Hook and notice. Display the opening organism images showing a child, a tree, a dog, a mushroom, a rock, and a toy robot. Ask, “Which of these could be an organism, and what makes you think so?” Students silently choose two examples and share an initial reason with a partner.

  2. 4–9 min · Build the definition. Use the definition and characteristics slides to introduce: an organism is an individual living thing. Guide students to identify common characteristics, including obtaining and using energy, growing and changing, responding to surroundings, reproducing, and carrying out life processes. Students paraphrase the definition in their own words and add one characteristic to their science notebook.

  3. 9–16 min · Observation activity. Provide each pair with the organism observation and classification sheet and a classroom object or image set such as a plant, seed, insect photograph, shell, rock, and toy. Students observe two examples, record what they notice, classify each as living, once living, or never living, and cite an observation as evidence. Remind students that “once living” objects came from organisms but are not currently alive.

  4. 16–21 min · Partner discussion. Display the partner discussion prompts. Students compare classifications using the frame, “I classified ___ as ___ because I observed ___.” Partners respectfully challenge or revise one idea and explain their reasoning. Invite two or three pairs to share an example that was difficult to classify.

  5. 21–27 min · Questions for investigation. Use the question-building and unit roadmap slides to connect today’s thinking to the unit. Model turning “Are organisms made of cells?” into a focused question such as “Do all organisms have cells?” Students write two questions on the worksheet, then star the question they most want to investigate. Partners read their starred questions aloud and summarize one another’s ideas.

  6. 27–30 min · Plenary and check. Return to the opening images with the closing review slide. Students complete the worksheet exit response: “An organism is ___; one characteristic of living things is ___; one question I have is ___.” Collect responses as students leave.
