Parts of a Fraction
Numerator: How many parts we have Denominator: How many equal parts in the whole The line between them means 'divided by' Example: In 3/4, we have 3 out of 4 equal parts
Activity: Create Unit Fractions
Draw or shade shapes to show unit fractions Unit fractions have 1 as the numerator Try making: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6 Remember: all parts must be equal!
Fractions Greater Than One Part
We can have more than one part shaded Example: 2/3 means 2 out of 3 equal parts Example: 3/4 means 3 out of 4 equal parts These are made of unit fractions added together!
