Think about words like: teacher, hopeful, quickly What do these word endings have in common? How do they change the base word?

What is a Suffix?
A word part added to the END of a base word Changes the meaning or part of speech Examples: -er, -ful, -ly, -tion Base word + suffix = new word

Suffix Detective Activity
Find the suffixes in these words: wonderful, teacher, quickly, action Circle the base word and underline the suffix Discuss with a partner what each suffix means

Noun Suffixes: Creating People and Things
-er/-or (one who does): teacher, actor -ist (one who practices): artist, scientist -tion/-sion (state/process): action, discussion -ness (quality of): kindness, darkness

Adverb Suffixes: How Things Happen
-ly (in a certain way): quickly, carefully -ward (in a direction): forward, backward -wise (in the manner of): likewise, otherwise Most adverbs end in -ly and describe verbs!
