Multiplication Properties: Strategies for Success
Grade 3 Mathematics Discovering the Magic of Multiplication Properties
Learning Goals - I Can Statements
I can use the commutative property to solve multiplication problems I can apply the associative property with three or more numbers I can use the distributive property to break apart numbers I can recognize when to use the identity and zero properties
What Do You Already Know?
Think about what you know about multiplication Share one multiplication fact you remember What patterns have you noticed with numbers?
The Commutative Property
The order doesn't matter! 3 × 4 = 4 × 3 Both equal 12 You can flip the numbers and get the same answer
Commutative Property Practice
Use your math manipulatives Make an array for 2 × 6 Now flip it to make 6 × 2 Count to prove they're the same!
The Associative Property
Grouping doesn't matter! (2 × 3) × 4 = 2 × (3 × 4) 6 × 4 = 2 × 12 Both equal 24
Associative Property Examples
{"left":"(2 × 5) × 3\n2 × (5 × 3)","right":"10 × 3 = 30\n2 × 15 = 30"}
The Distributive Property
Break apart numbers to make them easier! 6 × 8 = 6 × (5 + 3) 6 × 8 = (6 × 5) + (6 × 3) 6 × 8 = 30 + 18 = 48
Break It Apart Challenge
Try this: 7 × 6 Break 6 into 3 + 3 So: 7 × (3 + 3) = (7 × 3) + (7 × 3) Calculate: 21 + 21 = 42
The Identity Property
Any number times 1 equals itself 5 × 1 = 5 1 × 9 = 9 1 is the 'identity' because numbers keep their identity!
The Zero Property
Any number times 0 equals 0 8 × 0 = 0 0 × 15 = 0 Zero makes everything disappear!
Property Detective Challenge
Look at this equation: 4 × 7 = 7 × 4 Which property is being used? How do you know? Can you create your own example?
