Types of STAAR Writing Prompts

R - Restate the Question
Turn the question into the beginning of your answer Use key words from the original prompt Example: 'How does the author develop the theme?' becomes 'The author develops the theme by...' This ensures you stay on topic throughout your response
A - Answer the Question
Provide a clear, direct response to what's being asked Make your position or main idea obvious Use specific language rather than vague statements This becomes your thesis or main claim
C - Cite Evidence from Text
Use direct quotes from the provided text Include author's name when known Use proper citation format: (Author, line #) or (line #) Choose the most relevant evidence that supports your answer

E - Explain the Evidence
