📖 Reading Passage: Our Amazing Solar System

I can learn about the planets and their order in our solar system.

Our solar system is like a huge neighborhood in space! At the center is our Sun, a giant star that gives us light and heat. The Sun is so big that more than one million Earths could fit inside it!

Eight planets travel around the Sun in paths called orbits. The planets closest to the Sun are small and rocky. The planets farther away are much larger and made mostly of gas.

Here are the planets in order from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. A helpful way to remember this order is: "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos!"

Mercury is the smallest planet and closest to the Sun. Venus is the hottest planet with thick, poisonous clouds. Earth is our home planet with water and life. Mars is called the "Red Planet" because of its rusty color.

Jupiter is the largest planet with a giant red spot that is actually a storm! Saturn has beautiful rings made of ice and rock. Uranus spins on its side like a rolling ball. Neptune is the windiest planet with storms faster than 1,000 miles per hour!
