Brandon Yelavich Story Retelling

Read the story, then show how you understand and retell it. Use details from the passage to support your answers. For personal-response questions, answers will vary; a suitable example is provided.

The Long Way Around

In 2014, New Zealand adventurer Brandon Yelavich set out on an unusual challenge: to travel around the coastline of New Zealand on foot. Known as “Brando”, he wanted to test his limits and experience the country from the edge of the land. The journey was far from a simple walk. The coastline was rugged, and the weather could change quickly. At times, cliffs, rivers and rough terrain made it difficult to keep moving. Carrying what he needed and finding safe places to rest also took planning. Progress could be slow, and the effort of continuing day after day demanded patience. Yelavich kept going by focusing on the next stretch rather than the whole enormous journey. He had to adapt when conditions changed and make careful decisions about safety. Along the way, he met people and encountered places that most travellers might never see. Those moments helped make the hard days worthwhile. His journey became a story of persistence, preparation and responding to challenges. It was not a tale of everything going smoothly; it showed that a bold goal can be approached one step at a time. For someone retelling the story, the changing conditions, difficult choices and determination to continue are important parts to bring to life.

Understand the story

Answer using evidence from “The Long Way Around”.

1.Who is the central person in the passage, and what challenging goal did he set himself?
2.Which two details from the passage explain why the journey was difficult?
3.Choose the best explanation of how Yelavich managed such a large challenge.
  • He focused on the next stretch, adapted to conditions and made careful safety decisions.
  • He ignored the weather and hurried through every difficult section.
  • He expected the whole journey to be easy.
  • He stopped planning once he had started.
4.The passage says the story is not a tale of everything going smoothly. Explain what this contrast helps the reader understand about the journey.
5.Put these events or ideas in the order that best follows the passage: (A) He kept his focus on the next stretch; (B) He set out to travel around the coast; (C) Difficult terrain and changing weather tested him.

Prepare a retelling

A strong retelling keeps the key events and ideas while using your own words. Use the passage, not invented details, as your source.

6.Write a brief story plan with the main person, setting, goal, two challenges and how he responded to them.
7.Write a two- or three-sentence opening for an oral retelling. Introduce the person and goal, and create interest without adding unsupported facts.
8.Select two techniques that would help make an oral retelling engaging, then explain when you would use one of them.
9.What idea about dealing with a big challenge could an audience take from Yelavich’s story? Support your answer with one detail from the passage.
