Bridge Materials Strength Investigation

Investigate how much weight different materials can support when used as a simple bridge. Work with an adult when using weights, and stop if a test piece slips or becomes unsafe. Record what happens rather than trying to prove a prediction.

Plan a fair test

For each test, place one material across two supports with the same gap between them. Add identical counters to a cup at the centre, one at a time. Count how many counters the bridge holds before it bends so much that the cup slips or touches the table. Use the same support gap, cup and counters each time. Test each material three times if you can.

1.In this investigation, what does “stronger” mean?
  • The material has the brightest colour.
  • The bridge can support more counters before it bends too far.
  • The material is the longest.
2.Choose the two things that should stay the same in every test.
  • The gap between the supports and the type of counters
  • The material and the number of counters held
  • The colour of the supports and the room temperature
3.Which factor are you changing to make this a test of bridge materials?
4.Predict which will hold the most counters: a cardboard strip, a wooden craft stick or a plastic ruler. Give one reason for your prediction.

Trial 2: counters held

Trial 3: counters held

5.What did you observe when you added counters? Describe how at least one bridge changed.
6.Which material held the most counters in your results? Use a number from your table as evidence.
7.If a material held 8 counters in one trial and 10 in another, why might repeating the test be useful?
8.True or false: If one test uses a wider gap between supports, it is still a fair comparison with tests using a narrower gap.
TrueFalse
9.Complete the conclusion: In my test, the material that held the most counters was . My evidence is .
10.Imagine you are improving a small bridge for a walking track in Australia. Suggest one change to your test that could help you learn more about the materials, and explain what you would keep fair.
