Three bodies, many motions
Earth spins on an imaginary line called its axis. One complete rotation takes about 24 hours and causes day and night. Earth also travels in an orbit around the Sun; one revolution takes about 365 days. Earth's axis is tilted about 23.5 degrees. As Earth revolves around the Sun, this tilt causes each hemisphere to receive different amounts of direct sunlight during the year. The hemisphere tilted toward the Sun has longer, more direct sunlight and experiences summer. The opposite hemisphere experiences winter. Moonlight, gravity, and tides

Many coastal places have about two high tides and two low tides each day as Earth rotates through areas of higher and lower water. The Sun's gravity also affects tides, though the Moon has the stronger effect on Earth's tides.
