Element Flashcards Worksheet

At a building site, Ngaio and Hemi find a box of mixed-up element cards. Use the reference cards below to identify each element, check its symbol and atomic number, and explain how the clues help. Symbols use one or two letters: the first is uppercase and any second letter is lowercase. Do not handle or mix chemicals; the cards are information only.

Reference cards

Use these printable cards as your element reference. Atomic number tells you the number of protons in an atom of that element.

HYDROGEN Symbol: H Atomic number: 1 A very light element and the most abundant element in the universe.

HELIUM Symbol: He Atomic number: 2 A gas used in some balloons because it is less dense than air.

CARBON Symbol: C Atomic number: 6 Found in materials including graphite and diamond; both are forms of carbon.

OXYGEN Symbol: O Atomic number: 8 Makes up about 21% of Earth's atmosphere and is needed for respiration.

SODIUM Symbol: Na Atomic number: 11 A reactive metal; in table salt it is chemically bonded to chlorine.

CHLORINE Symbol: Cl Atomic number: 17 A reactive element used to disinfect some water supplies and pools.

IRON Symbol: Fe Atomic number: 26 A useful metal in steel; iron is also present in haemoglobin in blood.

GOLD Symbol: Au Atomic number: 79 A metal valued for jewellery; it resists corrosion in ordinary conditions.

The card-check challenge

Ngaio is sorting labels for materials mentioned in the site’s safety and supplies notes. Use the reference cards, not guesses based on the material’s appearance.

1.Which element card matches the symbol O? Choose the correct element name.
  • Oxygen
  • Gold
  • Iron
  • Hydrogen
2.Hemi finds the symbol Fe on a label. Write the element name and its atomic number.
3.Complete the card: sodium has the symbol and atomic number .
4.Put these elements in order from lowest to highest atomic number: carbon, helium, oxygen, hydrogen.

5.True or false: the chemical symbol for gold is G. Correct the statement if it is false.
TrueFalse
6.Match each symbol to its element: Cl, C, He. Choose from chlorine, carbon and helium.
  • Cl
  • C
  • He
  • carbon
  • helium
  • chlorine
7.A note says a material contains an element that is also found in graphite and diamond. Which element is it, and what is its symbol?
8.According to the reference card, what are chlorine's symbol and atomic number? Name one use listed on the card.
9.Create a concise flashcard for an element from the reference set that is not oxygen. Include its name, symbol, atomic number and one accurate fact from the card.
