First Aid Basics

Hemi, Levi and Hana are hiking with an adult in Aotearoa New Zealand. Use the safety notes and scenarios to practise what to do. First aid is not a substitute for professional care: keep yourself safe, get an adult, and call 111 for an emergency. Follow the advice of emergency services and your first-aid training.

Trailside safety notes

Use these reminders for the questions below: • Check for danger before approaching. Do not enter an unsafe area. • Get an adult. For a life-threatening emergency in New Zealand, call 111 and ask for ambulance help. Give the location and follow the call-taker’s instructions. • The three first-aid principles are: preserve life, prevent further harm, and promote recovery. • For a minor cut: wash your hands if possible, rinse the wound with clean water, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze if it is bleeding, then cover it with a clean dressing. Get help if bleeding is heavy, will not stop, or the wound is serious. • For a burn: cool it under cool running water for 20 minutes if possible. Do not use ice, butter or creams. Get adult help, especially for a large or serious burn. • For a suspected sprain: stop activity, support the injured part in a comfortable position and get an adult. Do not force movement or put ice directly on skin. • If someone is unresponsive or not breathing normally, get an adult and call 111 immediately. Follow the call-taker’s instructions; do not give food or drink.

1.Hana notices a loose rockfall above the track while Levi is sitting beside a scraped knee. What should Hana do first?
  • Run beneath the rocks to reach Levi quickly.
  • Check that the area is safe and alert the supervising adult.
  • Move the rocks away from the track.
2.Levi’s scrape is small and has stopped bleeding. Put these actions in a sensible order by writing the numbers 1–4 beside them: cover with a clean dressing; rinse with clean water; get an adult; wash hands if possible.
3.Hemi cuts his hand on a sharp rock and blood is soaking through a cloth. Which response is safest?
  • Leave him alone to rest while the group continues.
  • Tell an adult immediately; apply firm, steady pressure with clean gauze if available and get urgent help if bleeding is heavy or will not stop.
  • Wash the cut with stream water and keep hiking.
4.A hiker touches a hot camping mug and burns their fingers. State the first action and one thing they should not do.
5.Hana twists her ankle on uneven ground. Choose the best immediate plan.
  • Encourage her to walk it off so the group stays on schedule.
  • Stop the activity, support her ankle comfortably and get the supervising adult; do not force her to walk.
  • Pull and twist the ankle until it feels normal.
6.Match each situation to the most appropriate first-aid action.
  • Small scrape, bleeding has stopped
  • Burn from a hot mug
  • Possible ankle sprain
  • Person unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Cool under cool running water for 20 minutes if possible
  • Get an adult, call 111 immediately and follow instructions
  • Rinse with clean water and cover with a clean dressing
  • Stop activity, support comfortably and get an adult
7.A hiker collapses, is unresponsive and is not breathing normally. What should the group do? Include who to contact and what to do while waiting.
8.True or false: If someone has a minor burn, putting ice directly on it is the best first step.
TrueFalse
9.Complete the first-aid principles: preserve , prevent further , and promote .
10.The group is far from the trail entrance and needs to call 111. What useful location details could they give? Name two.
