Fitness Testing Portfolio Reflection

Use the fitness-test snapshot below to practise analysing results, then reflect on your own portfolio. If you do not have personal results, use the snapshot throughout. Fitness tests are clues about performance on one day—not a measure of your worth. Compare results only with suitable, reliable age-group data, and consider how technique, effort, health and test conditions affect results.

Practice portfolio: Mei’s results

Mei completed four tests in the same session. These results are invented for this worksheet. They are not norms and should not be used to rank people. For the 20 m shuttle run, a higher level is generally a stronger result; for the 30 m sprint, a lower time is faster; for the sit-and-reach, a larger reach is greater flexibility; and for push-ups, more controlled repetitions show greater muscular endurance.

Part A — Read the evidence

Use Mei’s snapshot for Questions 1–5. Explain your thinking rather than treating a single result as the whole story.

1.Match each test to the component it most directly checks: 20 m shuttle run, 30 m sprint, sit-and-reach, and one-minute push-ups.
  • 20 m shuttle run
  • 30 m sprint
  • Sit-and-reach
  • One-minute push-ups
  • Flexibility
  • Cardiorespiratory endurance
  • Speed
  • Muscular endurance
2.Mei’s sprint time was 5.8 seconds. Explain what this number tells you about Mei’s sprint performance, and why it would be misleading to call it good or poor without more information.
3.Which conclusion is best supported by the snapshot? A. Mei is the fittest person in the year group. B. Mei recorded 18 push-ups in one minute, which gives a baseline for future comparison. C. Mei should stop doing flexibility activities. D. Mei’s results prove how healthy Mei is.
  • A. Mei is the fittest person in the year group.
  • B. Mei recorded 18 push-ups in one minute, which gives a baseline for future comparison.
  • C. Mei should stop doing flexibility activities.
  • D. Mei’s results prove how healthy Mei is.
4.Mei repeats the sit-and-reach test after eight weeks. Name two things that should stay as similar as possible so the comparison is fair.
5.True or false: A single fitness-test result can show exactly how healthy and capable a person is in every physical activity. Explain your choice.

Part B — Reflect on your own portfolio

Use your own recorded results if available. If you do not have them, use Mei’s snapshot. Honest reflection is more useful than trying to produce a perfect result.

6.Write down two fitness tests from your portfolio, including each result and unit or scoring format. If using Mei’s snapshot, record the shuttle run and sit-and-reach results.
7.Identify one result or part of a fitness session you feel positive about. Explain what helped you do your best, such as preparation, persistence, pacing, technique or encouragement.
8.Choose one fitness component you would like to develop. Give one possible factor that may have influenced your result and one sensible way to investigate or address that factor.

Part C — Plan a safe next step

A useful goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound (SMART). Choose an activity that suits you, build up gradually and seek qualified guidance if you are unsure.

9.Set one realistic fitness goal for the next six weeks. State what you will work on, how you will measure progress, and when you will review it.
10.Name one useful indicator you could record while working towards your goal. Explain how recording it could help you decide whether to continue, adjust the plan or seek advice.
