Heart of the Matter

Trace a drop of blood on its journey through the heart. Read the information and use evidence to answer each question. The heart pathway is described in words.

A double-pump system

The heart is a muscular organ with four chambers. The right side receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. In the lungs, blood releases carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen. Oxygen-rich blood returns to the left side of the heart, which pumps it around the body. Valves help keep blood moving in one direction. The wall of the left ventricle is thicker than the right ventricle’s wall because it must pump blood around the whole body, while the right ventricle pumps blood only to the nearby lungs. Haemoglobin in red blood cells carries oxygen from the lungs to body cells.

1.Match each lettered description to the correct structure. A: vessel that returns oxygen-poor blood from the body; B: chamber that receives blood from A; C: chamber that pumps blood toward the lungs; D: vessel that carries blood from C to the lungs; E: vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the lungs; F: chamber that receives blood from E; G: chamber that pumps blood to the body; H: vessel that carries blood from G to the body.

2.A drop of oxygen-poor blood has just returned from the body. Put these structures in the order it travels through them before reaching the lungs: right ventricle, vena cava, pulmonary artery, right atrium.
3.Which vessel carries oxygen-rich blood from the lungs back to the heart? Choose one.
  • Aorta
  • Pulmonary artery
  • Pulmonary veins
  • Vena cava
4.Complete the pathway: Blood leaves the left ventricle through the and travels to the .
5.True or false? The right ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood around the whole body.
TrueFalse
6.Red blood cells contain haemoglobin. Explain how red blood cells help the body and why the heart needs to keep blood circulating.
7.The left ventricle has a thicker muscular wall than the right ventricle. Use the information in the passage to explain why.
8.A valve between two chambers does not close properly. Predict what may happen to blood flow and explain why valves are important.
9.A student says, “All arteries carry oxygen-rich blood.” Is this correct? Use one example from the heart pathway to support your answer.
10.Summarise one complete circuit of blood, starting at the right atrium. Include the lungs, both sides of the heart, and the body.
