Informative Texts About Animals

Read the information about koalas. Then explore how informative texts work and create a short fact file of your own. Use facts, not made-up events.

Koalas: tree-dwelling marsupials

Koalas are marsupials that live in forests and woodlands in eastern Australia. A marsupial is a kind of mammal. A baby koala is called a joey. After it is born, the tiny joey spends several months growing in its mother’s pouch. Koalas eat mainly eucalyptus leaves. These leaves do not give them much energy, so koalas rest or sleep for much of the day. They have strong claws and rough pads on their feet to help them grip tree trunks and branches. Koalas are not bears, even though people sometimes call them koala bears.

Plan your own animal fact file

Choose an Australian animal you know about, such as a wombat, platypus, emu or kangaroo. Use facts you already know to answer the next questions. If you are unsure of a fact, choose another one you know.

7.Name your animal and write two facts about its body, food or habitat. For example: “A wombat has strong claws. It digs burrows.”
8.Write a short informative paragraph about your chosen animal. Begin with a sentence that names or introduces the animal. Add at least two facts, and finish with another useful fact. Do not turn it into a story.
