At a fire station beside a native forest, Nikau and Manaia are checking how the habitat supports living things. Read the field notes and solve each habitat challenge. A habitat is the place where a living thing gets what it needs to survive.

Field notes: the forest edge

The fire station backs onto a native forest. The stream provides fresh water. Tall trees offer shelter and nesting places for birds. Tūī feed on nectar from flowers and also eat small insects. Kererū eat fruit and spread seeds in their droppings. Wētā shelter in tree holes and among leaf litter. Geckos eat small insects and use cracks and plants for shelter. Sunlight helps plants grow, providing food and shelter for other living things.
