Paper Plane Investigation Worksheet

Investigate whether a narrow-wing or wide-wing paper plane flies further. You can test your own planes or use the results table on this sheet. If you do a test, use the same paper, starting line, thrower and throwing style each time. Measure from the starting line to where each plane first lands. Record distances in metres.

Plan a fair test

A fair test changes one thing at a time and keeps other conditions the same.

1.Investigation question: Which plane design will travel further when both are thrown from the same starting line in the same way? What is the one thing you will change?
2.Use the results in the table to choose the prediction that is best supported for this investigation.
  • The wide-wing plane will travel further.
  • The narrow-wing plane will travel further.
  • Both planes will travel the same distance.
3.Name two things to keep the same so that the comparison is fair.
4.Fill in the blank: The distance from the starting line to the place where the plane first lands is the variable we measure.

Record and interpret results

A class tested both designs three times. Use this set of results for Questions 5–9. Distances are in metres.

5.Calculate the mean (average) distance for each design. Add the three distances for a design, then divide the total by 3. Include your working.
6.Which design travelled further on average, and by how much? Use the mean distances from Question 5.
7.True or false: The wide-wing plane travelled further than the narrow-wing plane on every throw. Use the table to support your answer.
TrueFalse
8.Suggest one reason why repeating each throw three times makes the results more useful than measuring just one throw.
9.Write a conclusion using evidence from the results. State which plane had the greater mean distance and whether the results support your prediction.
