Photosynthesis Song Worksheet

Read the song, then use its scientific ideas to solve the questions. Remember: photosynthesis stores energy in glucose.

The Photosynthesis Chorus

In leaves where green chlorophyll is found, Light from the Sun brings energy down. Water comes up from roots below, Carbon dioxide enters from the air we know. With light, water and carbon dioxide combined, Glucose is made and energy stored inside. Oxygen leaves; it drifts through the air— A useful product plants release everywhere! If light is dim, or carbon dioxide is few, Or temperature is too cold—or too hot, too— The rate may slow; less glucose is made. Each factor can limit the rate when it is in short supply or out of range.

Listen for the Science

Use evidence from the chorus and your science knowledge.

1.Which set names the three raw materials or conditions needed for photosynthesis?
  • Light, water and carbon dioxide
  • Oxygen, glucose and soil
  • Nitrogen, oxygen and warmth
  • Chlorophyll, glucose and oxygen
2.Complete the word equation: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + .
3.True or false? Photosynthesis transfers light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose.
TrueFalse
4.A plant is kept in very dim light, although it has enough water and carbon dioxide. Which factor is most likely limiting its rate of photosynthesis?
5.The chorus says that both very cold and very hot conditions can slow photosynthesis. Explain why temperature can affect the rate.
6.A class investigates whether brighter light changes photosynthesis in pondweed. Name the factor to change, one factor to keep the same, and a sensible way to measure the rate.
7.A leaf is tested for starch after a plant has been in the light. Put these steps in a sensible order: add iodine solution; heat the leaf in ethanol in a hot-water bath; boil the leaf briefly in water; rinse the leaf in warm water.
8.Why is finding starch in a leaf useful evidence that photosynthesis has taken place?
9.A plant has plenty of light and water, but the carbon dioxide concentration is low. Predict what happens to its photosynthesis rate and explain why.
10.Write two new song lines about one limiting factor. Include the factor and accurately describe how it can affect photosynthesis.
