The Bay’s Bright Bell

At the edge of a wide bay stood a small wooden lookout. Kahu, a young helper, visited it each morning with Losa, who knew the tides and weather. One clear day, they heard a faint ringing from the rocks below. A brass bell, once used to warn boats of danger, had slipped from its hook and was wedged between two stones. That afternoon, dark clouds gathered. A fishing waka was returning across the bay, but the rising wind made the safest channel hard to see. Kahu wanted to rush down and pull the bell free. Losa reminded him that the rocks were slippery and the water was rising. Instead, they called to Sione, the lookout keeper, and explained what they had found. Sione checked the tide and tied a safety rope around his waist. Kahu and Losa stayed on firm ground and held the rope while Sione carefully reached the bell. Together they lifted it back onto its hook. The bell rang out across the water, guiding the waka towards the sheltered channel. When the waka reached shore, everyone was safe. Kahu felt proud that he had asked for help instead of taking a dangerous risk. The three helpers agreed to check the bell regularly and keep the lookout ready for the next storm.
