Short Vowel Decodable Reader
The Stuck Dinghy
Hudson and Kirra had a job at the sailing club. A gust had shut the shed door, and a dinghy sat in the shed with its mast tipped against a rack. The club race would start at six, so they had to act fast. Kirra slid a thin, flat plank under the door. Hudson held it as she pushed. The door did not budge. “That latch is stuck,” he said. He ran back for a small tin of oil. A drip slid down the latch. Hudson gave it a quick tap. Click! The door swung open, but the dinghy still would not fit through. Its mast was snagged on a red strap. Kirra lifted the strap while Hudson slid the mast past the rack. They kept the boat level and took it out to the slip. A gust hit the sail, but Bodhi grabbed the tiller and set the boat straight. At six, the crew set off. The dinghy skimmed past the jetty. Hudson grinned. “That was a snug fit,” he said. Kirra laughed. “And a slick fix.”
