Storytime Sharing Observation Checklist

Read the original story below aloud to a small group. Observe each learner during the reading and discussion. Record what you notice, rather than expecting everyone to respond in the same way. A spoken answer, gesture, drawing, or communication aid can all show participation. The sample answers describe evidence to look for; they are not scripts learners must repeat.

The Little Pōhutukawa

On a windy morning, Maia and her koro walked along the beach. Near the dunes, Maia spotted a tiny pōhutukawa seedling leaning sideways. “It looks thirsty,” she said. Koro helped her scoop a little water from their bottle and pour it gently beside the plant. Maia made a small shelter from fallen leaves to block the wind. A week later, they returned. The seedling was still small, but its leaves stood upright. Maia smiled. “We helped it have a better chance,” she said. Koro nodded. “Small acts of care can make a difference.”

Observation notes

Use one row for each learner. Mark what you observed and add a brief example. Responses can be spoken, non-verbal, drawn, or communicated another way.
