Three Wishes Narrative

Your Story Challenge

Imagine you meet a witch who offers to grant three wishes. Plan and write a narrative about what you wish for and what unexpected consequences follow. Use paragraphs, vivid details, dialogue if it suits your story, and a clear ending.

Before you finish, check that your story has a clear beginning, middle and ending; describes characters, setting and feelings; uses interesting verbs and descriptive words; includes an unexpected turn; is organised into paragraphs; and uses accurate spelling and punctuation.

Plan Your Narrative

Jot down ideas for each part before you begin your full story.

1.How do you come across the witch, and what does the place around you look, sound or feel like?
2.What is your first wish? What surprising result does it bring?
3.What do you ask for with your second wish, and how does it complicate the story?
4.What is your final wish, and what unexpected effect does it have?
5.How do you feel as the consequences of your wishes unfold? Describe at least two different feelings.
6.How does your story resolve, and what has the narrator learnt?
7.Write your complete three-wishes narrative. Use your plan, organise the events into paragraphs, and give your story a title.
At the edge of the Saturday market, a tiny silver bell chimed inside a glass bottle. When I picked it up, a woman in a green cloak stepped out from behind a stack of pumpkins. She introduced herself as a spell-maker and offered me three wishes. “I wish I could understand every bird,” I said. The bell rang, and suddenly the gulls above the harbour were arguing about a missing chip. Their squawks were funny at first, but soon every bird in town was calling to me at once. I covered my ears and considered wishing for quiet. For my second wish, I asked for a quiet day. The birds fell silent—but so did every other sound. Cars rolled along the road without a rumble, and my friend’s laughter made no noise. The stillness felt strange, so I quickly used my third wish: I wanted everyone to get their voices back. The spell-maker tapped the bottle. Sound rushed back in a great whoosh, including the gulls, who immediately began squabbling again. This time, though, I listened carefully and found the missing chip tucked beside a bench. The birds cheered in a chorus of caws. I thanked the spell-maker and headed home, glad I had used my last wish to help others. I had learnt that a wish can solve one problem and create another—and that paying attention can be just as powerful as magic.
