About this illustration

Counting card showing 11 ladybugs on a plain white background. No labels — for students to count themselves.

How many ladybugs are on this counting card?

There are 11 ladybugs on this card — eleven. It is printed with no numeral and no label, so the counting is left to the student.

  • Past about five objects most students have to count rather than just see how many, so watch how they do it: touching or moving each one as they say the number is what stops an object being counted twice or missed altogether.
  • The card carries no numeral and no label, so the same picture works as a counting task, as a "write the numeral" task, or as a quick check of whether a student can count a set reliably and say how many without recounting.
  • 11 is odd, so this set cannot be split into two equal groups: 11 ÷ 2 gives 5 each with 1 left over.
  • 11 is 1 ten and 1 one, which is exactly how the numeral is written: the 1 counts the tens and the 1 counts the ones left over.
