About this illustration

Single horizontal domino with 0 pips on left half and 4 pips on right half. Total pips: 4. Navy pips on rounded white tile.

How many spots are on the blank–4 domino?

This domino has no spots on one half and 4 spots on the other, so it is worth 4 in total.

Addition
0 + 4 = 4
Double?
No
  • Each half of a domino carries its own number of spots, and the tile's value is the two halves added together: 0 + 4 = 4.
  • Turning the tile round swaps the halves without changing its value, which is the commutative property of addition: 0 + 4 = 4 + 0 = 4.
  • The same tile shows the subtraction facts too: 4 − 0 = 4 and 4 − 4 = 0.
  • A blank half is worth zero, so it adds nothing to the total — which is what makes dominoes a neat way to show that adding zero leaves a number unchanged.
  • A full double-six set has 28 tiles: every pair of numbers from blank to six once each, counting a tile and its turned-round twin as the same tile.
