Each column to the left is worth ten times the one before it: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on.
Take the number 4,562. The same four digits would mean something completely different in another order. Here:
- the 4 is in the thousands place, so it is worth 4,000
- the 5 is in the hundreds place, so it is worth 500
- the 6 is in the tens place, so it is worth 60
- the 2 is in the ones place, so it is worth 2
Add those values back together — 4,000 + 500 + 60 + 2 — and you get 4,562. That is the whole idea in one number: a digit (the symbol) is different from its value (what it is worth in that spot).
Why place value matters so much
Place value is the hidden engine behind almost every operation students learn after counting. Before any charts, have students bundle real objects — straws, popsicle sticks, or cubes — into groups of ten with a rubber band. Ten loose straws become one bundle. This 'unitizing' is the leap: a group of ten is now counted as one thing.

Swap the bundles for base-ten blocks: single unit cubes for ones and rods (sticks of ten) for tens. Build a number like 34 as 3 rods and 4 units, and say it as 'three tens and four ones.'

Common place value misconceptions
Watch for these three errors — each one signals a specific gap:
- Ignoring zero as a placeholder. A student reads 205 as 'twenty-five' because they skip the empty tens column. Zero is doing real work: it holds the tens place open. Practising numbers with internal zeros (207, 3,060, 500) fixes this.
- Confusing the digit with its value. Asked what the 7 in 472 is worth, a student says '7' instead of '70.' Go back to base-ten blocks — the 7 is seven tens, or 70.
- Losing alignment in column arithmetic. Adding 34 + 8 as if the 8 were tens gives a wildly wrong answer. Reinforce that ones line up under ones. Squared grid paper, or a place value chart with the sum written in, keeps columns honest.
