Home education in Alberta: the rules, the registration and a plan that works
Alberta has the most developed and best-funded home education system in Canada. Parents notify a school authority (a public, separate, francophone or accredited private school board) each year, choose to follow either the Alberta Programs of Study or their own program aligned to the Schedule of Learning Outcomes, and receive funding of about $928 per student in 2026–27 (half that for kindergarten) to spend on approved educational resources. A facilitator from the school authority contacts the family at least twice a year.
Alberta also allows a 'notification only' option with no school authority and no funding, and blended or shared-responsibility programs. This guide explains the choices, the 30 September deadline, what the facilitator does, and how to claim the funding.

How to start home education in Alberta

Choose a supervising school authority
Any Alberta school board or accredited private school that accepts home education notifications; several specialise in it and offer facilitators, resource libraries and funding reimbursement. Or choose notification-only to the Minister, with no supervision and no funding.

Notify by 30 September
Submit the Home Education Notification Form and a program plan (either the Alberta Programs of Study or a parent-developed program addressing the Schedule of Learning Outcomes) to the school authority. Notification must be accepted by 30 September for the student to be funded that year, and renewed every year.

Work with the facilitator
A certificated teacher contacts you at least twice a year to discuss progress, review samples and evaluate against your plan. Visits are by arrangement; many are virtual.

Use the funding
The school authority passes on at least half of the provincial grant (the rest covers its supervision). Reimbursement is for approved resources: curriculum, books, lessons, supplies. Keep receipts.
