Charlotte Mason homeschool curriculum: what it is, what a day looks like, and how to start
Charlotte Mason was a British educator who died in 1923 and whose ideas have quietly become one of the most popular homeschool approaches in the English-speaking world. Her method rests on a few strong convictions: children are whole persons, not vessels to fill; they learn best from 'living books' written by people who love their subject rather than from textbooks; lessons should be short and attention full; and a child who tells back what they have read has learned it.

The principles
What makes a homeschool Charlotte Mason
Living books, not textbooks
A living book is written by one author with real knowledge and real enthusiasm, in good prose. A biography of Marie Curie beats a science textbook chapter about her; a novel set in the Middle Ages beats a summary of them. The child's mind feeds on ideas, and living books are where ideas live.
Narration
After a single reading, the child tells back what they heard, orally at first and in writing from about age ten. Narration is the whole of comprehension, composition and memory training in one act, and it removes the need for most worksheets and quizzes.
Short lessons and the habit of attention
Lessons run ten to twenty minutes for young children and rarely beyond thirty for older ones. The child gives full attention because the lesson will end before attention does. Habit training, of attention, obedience and truthfulness, is treated as a core part of education.
Nature study and time outdoors
Hours outside every day for young children, a nature notebook with dated drawings, and the slow, first-hand knowledge of the plants, birds and weather of one's own place. Science begins here.
A wide and generous curriculum
Beyond the three Rs: history, geography, literature, poetry, Shakespeare, Plutarch, picture study, composer study, handicrafts, foreign language, hymns and folk songs. Many subjects, each in small, regular portions.
Masterly inactivity
The parent sets the feast and steps back. Children are given time to play, think and be bored, and are not entertained or managed every minute.
A typical Charlotte Mason day
What the method looks like at nine in the morning with real children. Adjust the times; keep the shape.
- 8:30Morning time together: a hymn, a folk song, a poem, a Bible or wisdom reading, a few minutes of picture study or composer study
- 9:00Math, one child at a time, 15–25 minutes each while the others do copywork or read

Short. About two hours of lessons for children under nine, three for ages nine to twelve, and four for teens, followed by afternoons outdoors and in free play. Short lessons with full attention are the point.
Does Charlotte Mason work for high school?
Yes. Ambleside Online runs through year 12 with serious reading lists; narration becomes essay writing; nature study becomes lab science. Many families add outside classes for math and lab sciences and keep the method for the humanities.
