At dusk, Maia and her cousin Theo reached the old wharf at Te Rimu Bay. The last ferry was already pulling away—but a small red backpack sat alone on the jetty. Inside, they found a damp notebook with a hand-drawn map and a note: “Please get this to the lighthouse before the storm.” The cousins hurried along the coastal track. Wind whipped the flax, and rain blurred the ink on the map. At a fork in the path, Theo wanted to take the steep cliff track. Maia noticed a line of glowing shells leading down towards the beach. They followed the shells and found a stranded puppy beside a broken dinghy. The notebook’s map had marked the cove, not the lighthouse. Maia used the note’s number to call the harbour keeper, who arrived by small boat and reunited the puppy with its owner. They reached the lighthouse just as its beacon flashed across the bay.

Build a story together

A strong shared story grows from listening, adding ideas and making choices as a team.

6.A teammate suggests that the notebook belongs to someone who lives on a tiny island. Write a “Yes, and…” sentence that accepts the idea and adds a new detail.

7.Your team disagrees about whether the puppy should be rescued before delivering the note. Which response is most helpful?

8.Invent a main character for a new coastal mystery. Give the character a goal and one useful strength.
