Ginger Bug Observation Worksheet

A ginger bug is a mixture of fresh ginger, sugar and water in which naturally occurring microorganisms can ferment sugars. A student group fed the same jar each day and recorded observations for five days. Analyse their results, then plan a fair follow-up test. Do not taste any experimental mixture; follow your teacher’s hygiene and food-safety instructions.

Read the results

The group kept the jar in the same place and added 5 g of sugar and 5 g of grated ginger each day. They used the same pH strips and estimated bubbles in the same way each time. Room temperature was about 21°C.
