⚡ The Amazing Journey of New Zealand's Electricity

Have you ever wondered how electricity gets to your home? Every time you flick a light switch or charge your tablet, you're using electricity that has travelled an incredible journey across New Zealand!

Where Does Our Power Come From?

New Zealand is lucky to have lots of renewable energy sources. About 85% of our electricity comes from clean sources that won't run out. The biggest source is hydroelectric power - that's electricity made from flowing water! Massive dams like those on Lake Taupo capture rushing water and turn it into power for millions of homes.

We also use geothermal energy from the hot rocks deep underground, especially around Rotorua and Taupo. Wind farms with giant turbines spin in the windy hills, and solar panels capture sunlight to make electricity too.

The Great Electricity Highway

Once electricity is made, it travels along the national grid - imagine it like a giant highway system for electricity! Huge transmission lines carry electricity at very high voltage across the country. These thick cables stretch for thousands of kilometres, from power stations in the South Island all the way to cities in the North Island.

Before electricity reaches your house, it goes through substations where the voltage is reduced to make it safe for homes. Then smaller distribution lines carry it through your neighbourhood.

Staying Safe Around Electricity

Electricity is powerful and can be dangerous! Never climb trees near power lines, and always stay at least 4 metres away from fallen wires. If you see damaged electrical equipment, tell an adult immediately. Remember: electricity and water don't mix - never touch electrical appliances with wet hands!
