1.Manaia is helping at the food bank when she spots a blue envelope beside a box of apples. Which opening sentence best creates a sense of mystery?

2.Choose a main character for your own food-bank story. Write their name and one personality trait that could help them solve a problem.

5.Join these ideas with and or but, then punctuate your sentence: Manaia felt nervous. She opened the envelope.
Draft and improve
Use your plan to write a story with a clear beginning, a problem and an ending.
6.Write the opening of your story. Introduce the character and food-bank setting, then hint at the problem. Include at least one detail that helps readers picture the scene.
7.Continue your story: show what the character does to investigate or solve the problem. Include one line of dialogue with speech marks.
8.Write an ending that solves the main problem. Show how the character feels at the end, rather than simply writing “The end.”
9.Reread your draft. Write one place where you used a strong detail or interesting word, and one change that would make your story clearer or more exciting.
10.Editing check: Write one sentence from your story that has a capital letter, correct end punctuation and correctly punctuated dialogue. If you have not used dialogue yet, add a spoken line.
