Plant cell diagram

A plant cell is the basic building block of every plant, and it has three parts an animal cell lacks: a cell wall, chloroplasts and one large central vacuole. Below is a labeled diagram, a plain-language table of every part and its job, and free printable worksheets for your class.

Parts of a plant cell and what they do

Kid-friendly descriptions of each organelle — the first eight are the ones most diagrams expect students to label.

Endoplasmic reticulumOlder studentsA folded network of membranes that moves proteins and other materials around the cell. Rough ER is covered in ribosomes; smooth ER is not.
Golgi apparatusOlder studentsThe packing department. It sorts, packages and ships proteins to where they're needed.

What are the parts of a plant cell?

The main parts of a plant cell are the cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, a large central vacuole, mitochondria and ribosomes. Older students also learn the endoplasmic reticulum, which moves proteins and other materials around the cell, and the Golgi apparatus, which packages them for delivery.

What does the cell wall do?

The cell wall is a stiff outer layer made mostly of cellulose. It protects the cell, gives it its regular box-like shape, and lets plants stand upright without a skeleton. Only plant cells (plus fungi and many bacteria) have a wall — animal cells do not.

What do chloroplasts do?

Chloroplasts carry out photosynthesis: using the energy in sunlight, they turn carbon dioxide and water into glucose (the plant's food), releasing oxygen. They are green because they contain the pigment chlorophyll, which absorbs the light.

What is the large central vacuole for?

The large central vacuole is a storage sac filled with watery sap — often taking up most of the space inside a plant cell. When it is full, it presses outward against the cell wall and keeps the plant firm; when cells lose water, the pressure drops and the plant wilts.

What is the difference between a plant cell and an animal cell?

Plant cells have three things animal cells lack: a cell wall, chloroplasts and one large central vacuole. That is also why plant cells look regular and box-like while animal cells are rounded and irregular. Both kinds share a cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria and ribosomes.

Do plant cells have mitochondria?

Yes. A common mix-up is thinking chloroplasts replace mitochondria — they don't. Chloroplasts make the food (glucose), and mitochondria then release the energy stored in that food through respiration. Plant cells need both.
