Sea otters spend much of their lives in the ocean along the Pacific coast. Their thick fur traps air close to their skin, helping them stay warm in cold water. Unlike many marine mammals, sea otters do not have a thick layer of blubber.
A sea otter often eats while floating on its back. It may place food on its chest and use its front paws to hold it. Sea otters eat animals such as crabs, clams, and sea urchins. To open a hard shell, an otter may use a rock as a tool, striking the shell against it.
Sea otters also help the ocean habitat where they live. Sea urchins feed on kelp, a large kind of seaweed. When otters eat sea urchins, fewer urchins may be left to munch on the kelp forest. This helps the underwater forest grow and provides shelter for other sea creatures. A mother otter keeps her pup close as it learns to swim and find food.
