The Mystery of Monarch Butterflies

Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies begin an incredible journey that scientists are still trying to understand. These orange and black insects travel up to 3,000 miles from Canada and the northern United States to central Mexico. What makes this migration so amazing is that the butterflies making the trip south have never been to Mexico before.

The monarchs that fly to Mexico are actually the great-great-grandchildren of the butterflies that made the journey north the previous spring. Somehow, these butterflies know exactly where to go without any guidance from their parents or grandparents.
