The Green Garden Project

Last spring, the Oak Street neighborhood had a big problem. There was an empty lot filled with trash and weeds. The area looked terrible, and kids had no safe place to play outside.

Mrs. Chen, a teacher at the local school, had a bright idea. She wanted to turn the ugly lot into a beautiful community garden. At first, many people thought she was barking up the wrong tree. They didn't think her plan would work.

Mrs. Chen didn't give up. She talked to families in the neighborhood. Soon, thirty people joined her project. They worked together every Saturday for three months. First, they cleaned up all the trash. Next, they planted vegetables like carrots, beans, and corn. They also planted flowers and fruit trees.

Today, the garden feeds forty families in the neighborhood. Children learn about plants and nature. The garden saves each family about $50 per month on food costs. Best of all, neighbors work together and have become good friends.

The Green Garden Project shows how one person's idea can make a whole community better. Mrs. Chen's garden solved the neighborhood's problem and created something wonderful for everyone.
