Human Body 3-D Project

Choose one human body system to investigate, plan a small 3-D model, and prepare a short presentation. Use the information and planning prompts on this sheet; no outside reading is needed. Your model should fit on a desk, show key parts clearly, and include labels. Present for about 2–3 minutes.

Choose and investigate

Select one: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, skeletal, muscular, or nervous system. Each question applies to the system you select. Use complete ideas in your answers. System information and fact bank: • Circulatory: The heart pumps blood, and blood vessels carry it. The heart beats about 100,000 times a day. • Respiratory: The lungs take in oxygen, and the trachea carries air. The lungs contain many tiny air sacs where oxygen enters the blood. • Digestive: The stomach helps break down food, and the small intestine absorbs nutrients. The small intestine is several metres long in an adult. • Skeletal: The skull protects the brain, and the ribs protect organs. An adult human usually has 206 bones. • Muscular: Skeletal muscles move bones, and the heart muscle pumps blood. The heart is a muscle that works continuously. • Nervous: The brain processes information, and nerves carry messages. Some nerve messages travel very quickly through the body.

1.Which body system will your model explain? Write its name and one reason you chose it.
2.Match each system to its main job. Write the letter beside each system: A. moves blood around the body; B. takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide; C. breaks food into nutrients; D. supports the body and protects organs; E. helps the body move; F. sends and receives messages. 3.Name two important parts of your chosen system and describe what each part does.

Follow the body's teamwork

Body systems work together. Think about what happens when a person runs, eats, or reacts to something.

4.When you run, your muscles need more oxygen. Which two systems work together to help deliver it? Choose the best answer.

  • Respiratory and circulatory
  • Nervous and digestive
  • Skeletal and muscular
5.True or false: The nervous system can help the body respond quickly when you touch something hot.

6.Complete the chain: Food is broken down by the system, and nutrients from food can be carried around the body by the system.
7.Explain one way your chosen system works with a different body system. Include what each system contributes.

Plan your 3-D model

Use recycled or classroom craft materials such as cardboard, paper, clay, yarn, cotton balls, or clean containers. Make the model stable and desk-sized. Show the important parts, use color thoughtfully, and add readable labels.

8.Sketch your model plan. Add at least three labels and a key explaining what your colors or materials represent.
9.Write two materials you plan to use and explain how each will help show a part or feature of your system.
10.Choose one fact from the fact bank in the Choose and investigate section about your system. Write the fact and explain why you find it interesting.

Rehearse your presentation

Prepare a 2–3 minute talk: explain the system's job, point out labeled parts on your model, share your fact, and describe one connection with another system. Speak clearly and practice the timing.

11.Fill in the presentation planner: My system is .
12.Fill in the presentation planner: Its main job is .
13.Fill in the presentation planner: One part I will point out is .
14.Fill in the presentation planner: My system works with the system because .
15.What is one thing you will do to make your presentation easy for an audience to understand?
