📖 Reading Passage: New York State Geography

New York State is located in the northeastern United States. A state is a large area of land with its own government that is part of a country. New York State is divided into smaller areas called counties. A county is a section of a state with its own local government. New York has 62 counties in total!

These 62 counties are grouped together into larger areas called regions. A region is a group of counties that share similar features like geography, climate, or economy. New York State has ten main regions, including the Capital Region, Central New York, the Finger Lakes, and Long Island.

Each region has its own special characteristics. For example, the Finger Lakes region is known for its long, narrow lakes that look like fingers on a hand. The Adirondack region is famous for its mountains and forests. New York City, located in the downstate region, is the largest city in the entire state and contains five counties: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

Understanding how New York State is organized helps us learn about different places and communities across our state. From the busy streets of New York City to the peaceful mountains of the Adirondacks, each county and region contributes to making New York State a diverse and interesting place to live!
