Passage A: The monarch butterfly is one of nature's most amazing travelers. Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies fly up to 3,000 miles from Canada and the northern United States to Mexico. This journey takes several generations to complete. The butterflies that arrive in Mexico are not the same ones that left Canada months earlier. Along the way, they stop to lay eggs, and their offspring continue the journey south.

Passage B: Recycling helps protect our environment in many ways. When we recycle paper, we save trees from being cut down. Recycling plastic bottles keeps them out of oceans where they can harm sea animals. Recycling also saves energy because it takes less energy to make new products from recycled materials than from raw materials. Every American throws away about 4.5 pounds of trash per day, but much of this could be recycled instead.

Without bees, these plants cannot produce fruit. Unfortunately, bee populations have been declining due to pesticides, disease, and loss of habitat. Scientists and farmers are working together to create bee-friendly environments and reduce the use of harmful chemicals.
