The Lantern on the Ridge

On the way back from a difficult quest, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover reached a rocky ridge just as a storm rolled in. Their only safe route crossed a narrow bridge over a rushing stream. At the far end, a lantern blinked weakly in the rain. Grover stopped. “I can’t cross that bridge,” he said, gripping his reed pipes. “The boards are moving.” Percy wanted to hurry. The storm was getting stronger, and the lantern might go out. But he noticed Grover’s hands shaking. “We’ll take it one step at a time,” Percy said. He offered his arm without teasing Grover or pushing him. Annabeth studied the bridge. She found a sturdy rope tied to a post and showed Percy how to secure it around the three of them. “We can cross together,” she said. “I’ll go first and test each board.” Grover took a deep breath and followed. When a board creaked, Percy stopped so Grover could steady himself. Annabeth waited too, even though the rain soaked her jacket. At last, all three reached the other side. The lantern was still glowing. Grover smiled with relief. “Thanks for waiting,” he said. Percy grinned. “That’s what teammates do.” Annabeth nodded. Their careful plan had helped them reach safety—and no one had been left behind.
