A single raindrop begins as a tiny droplet in a cloud, formed when water vapor cools and condenses. When the droplet becomes heavy enough, it falls to the earth as rain. Once it reaches the ground, the raindrop can take many paths. It might land on a leaf and drip down to the soil, where it helps nourish plants. Some raindrops flow into streams and rivers, traveling long distances before reaching lakes or oceans. Along the way, water evaporates back into the air, forming clouds again. This continuous movement of water between the earth and the atmosphere is called the water cycle. Every raindrop plays an important role in this cycle, supporting life by providing water to plants, animals, and people.
