The French and Indian War (1754-1763)
Britain and France fought over land in North America. Native American tribes helped both sides. Britain won the war but spent lots of money. To pay for the war, Britain decided to tax the American colonists. This made the colonists angry because they had no say in British government.

The Stamp Act (1765)
Britain passed a law that put a tax on paper items like newspapers, playing cards, and legal documents. Colonists had to buy special stamps to put on these items. The colonists were furious because they believed "no taxation without representation" - meaning they shouldn't be taxed if they couldn't vote for their leaders.

The Boston Massacre (1770)
British soldiers were stationed in Boston to keep order. On March 5, 1770, a crowd of colonists began throwing snowballs and rocks at the soldiers. The nervous soldiers fired into the crowd, killing five colonists. This event was called the "Boston Massacre" and made colonists even angrier at Britain.

The Boston Tea Party (1773)
Britain gave one company control over all tea sales in America. Angry colonists dressed up as Native Americans and dumped 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor. This protest was called the Boston Tea Party. It was their way of saying they wouldn't accept unfair taxes.

The Intolerable Acts (1774)
King George III was so angry about the Boston Tea Party that he passed harsh new laws to punish Massachusetts. These laws closed Boston Harbor, took away many colonial rights, and forced colonists to house British soldiers in their homes. Colonists called these the "Intolerable Acts" because they were impossible to tolerate or accept.
