Run-On Sentence Correction

A run-on sentence incorrectly joins two complete thoughts. A fused sentence has no punctuation between the thoughts; a comma splice joins them with only a comma. Fix a run-on by separating the thoughts with a period, joining them with a semicolon, adding a comma and a coordinating conjunction (such as and, but, or so), or making one thought subordinate with a subordinating conjunction (such as although, because, or while).

Identify and correct

For each item, label the sentence Correct, Fused sentence, or Comma splice. If it is a run-on, rewrite it using one of the correction methods above.

1.The penguins splashed in the pool the keeper brought them fresh fish.
2.Sofia watched the sea lions, Caleb read the signs beside the exhibit.
3.Although the reptile house was busy, Amara found a quiet place to sketch.
4.The giraffes reached for leaves, their long tongues curled around the branches.
5.Rain began to fall visitors hurried toward the indoor exhibits.
6.The animal-care team prepared a meal for the otters.
7.The zoo opened its new bird habitat, families gathered near the entrance.
8.The red panda climbed a wooden platform it paused to sniff a snack.

Edit a short paragraph

Rewrite the paragraph so that every run-on is corrected. Keep the ideas in the same order.

9.At the zoo, Sofia stopped by the elephant habitat, she noticed a keeper carrying a bucket the elephants gathered near the gate. The keeper offered them pieces of fruit, one elephant reached with its trunk.
10.Write one original correct sentence, one fused sentence, and one comma splice. Make each sentence about a zoo visit.
