The Missing Kite

On Saturday morning, Wyatt and her dog, Pip, went to Maple Park. Wyatt carried a bright blue kite that her grandfather had helped her make. The wind was perfect for flying. Wyatt ran across the grass and lifted the kite into the air. It soared above the trees—then suddenly dipped behind a tall hedge. The string slipped from Wyatt’s hands. Pip barked and raced toward the hedge, but the kite was gone. Wyatt felt worried. She and Pip searched near the picnic tables and the pond. At last, Wyatt heard a faint rustle in a patch of bushes. Pip sniffed carefully and found the kite caught on a low branch. Wyatt gently freed it and checked that it was not torn. Soon the kite was flying high again. Wyatt held the string tightly, and Pip sat beside her in the sunshine. Wyatt smiled. Their search had turned a worrying moment into an adventure.
