Tectonic Hazards Reading Comprehension
📖 Reading Passage: Tectonic Hazards
I can identify and explain different types of tectonic hazards and their effects on Earth.
Deep beneath Earth's surface, huge pieces of rock called tectonic plates are constantly moving. These plates fit together like puzzle pieces and cover our entire planet. When these plates move, bump into each other, or pull apart, they can create dangerous events called tectonic hazards.
There are three main types of tectonic hazards: earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. Each one can cause serious damage to people, buildings, and the environment.
Earthquakes happen when tectonic plates suddenly move or slip past each other. This movement sends shock waves through the ground, making the earth shake violently. Strong earthquakes can knock down buildings, crack roads, and cause landslides. Scientists measure earthquakes using a scale that goes from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most powerful.
Volcanoes form when melted rock, called magma, pushes up through cracks in the Earth's surface. When a volcano erupts, it shoots out hot lava, ash, and poisonous gases. The lava can destroy everything in its path, while the ash can make it hard to breathe and can damage crops and buildings miles away.
Tsunamis are giant ocean waves that can be over 100 feet tall! They usually happen when an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption moves the ocean floor. These massive waves travel very fast across the ocean and can flood coastal areas, destroying homes and carrying away cars, trees, and even buildings.
Scientists work hard to predict when these tectonic hazards might happen so they can warn people to stay safe. While we cannot stop these natural events, we can prepare for them by building stronger structures and having emergency plans ready.
