Criterion 1: Understanding What Cells Are

Excels (46-50 points): I can clearly explain that cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. I understand that cells contain specialized parts (organelles) and can describe the differences between plant and animal cells with detailed examples.

Proficient (36-45 points): I can explain that cells are the smallest units of life and identify most major cell parts. I can describe some differences between plant and animal cells.

Developing (26-35 points): I know that cells are tiny parts that make up living things. I can identify some basic cell parts but may confuse plant and animal cell differences.

Beginning (0-25 points): I have limited understanding of what cells are and struggle to identify basic cell parts or differences between cell types.

Criterion 2: Understanding Cell Functions

Excels (46-50 points): I can explain specific functions of cell organelles (nucleus controls the cell, mitochondria provide energy, chloroplasts make food in plants, etc.) and describe how these functions keep organisms alive and healthy.

Proficient (36-45 points): I can describe the main job of several cell parts and explain how cells help organisms survive by carrying out life processes like getting energy and removing waste.

Developing (26-35 points): I can name some cell parts and their basic jobs, like the nucleus being the "control center," but my explanations are simple.

Beginning (0-25 points): I have trouble explaining what cell parts do or how they help living things survive.

Criterion 3: Understanding How Cells Work Together

Excels (46-50 points): I can explain how millions of cells work together to form tissues, organs, and organ systems. I understand that cells must cooperate and communicate to keep complex organisms like humans and plants functioning properly.

Proficient (36-45 points): I can describe how groups of similar cells work together to do specific jobs in the body, like muscle cells working together to help us move.

Developing (26-35 points): I understand that living things are made of many cells, and these cells need to work together, but I'm still learning how this happens.

Beginning (0-25 points): I have difficulty understanding how multiple cells work together or why this teamwork is important for living organisms.
