📖 Historical Overview of the Texas Revolution

In the 1830s, Texas was part of Mexico. Many American settlers lived there, but they were unhappy with the Mexican government. The settlers wanted to petition (ask formally) for more rights and freedoms.

The Mexican government was split into two groups. Federalists wanted states to have more power to govern themselves. Centralists wanted the national government in Mexico City to have all the power. When the Centralists took control, they tried to abolish (get rid of) many rights that Texans had enjoyed.

The Texans could not reach a compromise (agreement where both sides give up something) with Mexico. They tried to find a peaceful resolution (solution) to their problems, but it didn't work. Finally, the Texans decided to start a rebellion (fight against the government) to become independent.

During the war, both armies needed provisions (food, weapons, and supplies) to keep fighting. The Texas Revolution lasted from 1835 to 1836 and ended with Texas becoming an independent republic.
